Avengers: Age Of Ultron

 

Avengers: Age of Ultron just became the second largest weekend box office opening ever, with $187.7 million at North American theaters. However The Avengers, still holds onto the top domestic opening weekend of $207.4 million, but there are plenty of reasons why the sequel didn’t match up to it’s predecessor.

It was a tough weekend.

Between the Kentucky Derby, the huge Mayweather vs Pacquiao fight, NBA Playoffs, and the news of a new princess being born to Prince Williams and Kate Middleton, not many people were willing to leave their TV sets this weekend.

With such a star studded cast, Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk, Chris Evans as Captain America and Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow, it’s not surprising that the film has a huge audience. Had it been released on any other week, it’s safe to say that Age of Ultron would have become number one. Most studios avoided putting up new movies this weekend, refusing to go head-to-head with the Disney-Marvel epic, so it’s impressive that it’s competition was mainly a pay-per-view event.

The Joss Whedon film amassed $627 million globally in 12 days. It was projected that Ultron would edge out the 2012 film, because it had an opening day gross of $84.5 million. Still, it shouldn’t bother Marvel Studios, they have three of the biggest domestic opening weekends in history, with Iron Man 3 in third place at $174.1 million.

This record is suspected to stand, until Star Wars: The Force Awakens, also a Disney film, hits theaters this Christmas.
